Before you can design new sounds with Alchemy you need to understand how its different parts fit together, and how each of them contributes to what you hear.

The diagram shows signal flow from left to right through the different sound generating and processing modules. Each sound can contain up to four sources: A, B, C, and D. Each source consists of additive, spectral, granular, sampler, and virtual analog elements. Multiple elements can be active in each source. Each source has three independent filters that can operate in parallel or in series. These sources are used to create and shape the basic tone of the sound.

All modulation in this section applies per voice. The Morph option lets you blend all four of these or however many you have enabled. In the window to the right you can drag the blue dot around to blend the four sources.

Above the 2 knobs on the right is a tab bar. Select the third option called Morph XY, and slide the dot around to see if you like the sound. The Perform pad is something unique to Alchemy, and having 4 oscillators is no joke! Hopefully that gives you enough insight to start playing around with Alchemy in Logic Pro X. The interface is arguably a bit clunky and dated compared to some other modern soft synths, and we can only hope that the rumors are true that Apple plans on updating it a bit to put it on par with Serum and Massive.

Frustrated by the sonic limitations of the EXS24 sampler? You might well have already! Its strength is undoubtedly the speed alchsmy which you can map a variety of samples in seconds. If you want to create purely synthetic sounds, the additive, spectral, and virtual analog synthesis engines are full-featured, matching or exceeding the power and facilities of many standalone instruments. An Alchemy preset can contain up to four sources, each using one or more synthesis engines. You can morph or crossfade between these sources. Dozens of modeled analog and digital filters are available, in addition to multiple racks of integrated effect units and an extensive modulation section.

Alchemy also features a powerful arpeggiator that can control each source independently and provides flexible pattern modulation options. You can now move them around to create different combinations. If you adjust any of the knobs, they will stay that way if you switch to another snapshot. If you right click on any of the knobs, and look under Delete Modulation, it will show what parameter is assigned to that knob. All the way to the right are the standard ADSR controls found on most synths. The main thing to know is that there are 4 oscillator sections, A through D.
