Needless to say we drove Highway 50 multiple times on its eastern end and is it as desolate as they say all the way to Delta, Utah. However it is a great highway for experiencing the Great Basin, this section of the US that does not drain to the Atlantic or Pacific, but rather into itself.
In addition to no external drainage, it is also defined by range and basin geography which means as you move east to west or vice versa you pass a series of alternating hot, arid valleys and cool, alpine peaks. Nowhere is this more pronounced than Great Basin National Park where Wheeler Peak at 13, feet is nearly 8, feet higher than the Snake Valley below. This juxtaposition combines to create environments that are not the most comfortable for living.
Thus you have one of the least populated areas in the country and this Highway runs right through it. The Steptoe Valley with Ely is the most populated in the east with several interesting things to see like the Ward Charcoal Ovens and a lake. The Green Springs Valley has a windmill farm that at least provides you something to see in addition to the towering Wheeler Peak. Finally, the Snake Valley is the most desolate, really having nothing.
You then have two passes around 7, feet. All in all a great road for travel but not a good road to find another traveler.
